The Best Tips for After Sun Skin Care

by Melissa Chichester

Summer is a time to enjoy the sun, water sports, picnics, hiking, and so much more.

But after spending a fun day under the sun, it’s important to give your skin the pampering it deserves.

Sun and wind exposure can lead to skin discomfort. However, with the right after-sun care routine, you can help soothe and nourish your skin.

From taking a cool bath to applying aloe vera gel, these simple yet effective steps will help revitalize your skin and keep it looking its healthy best.

Re-hydrate your body

Staying hydrated helps your skin stay radiant and helps your entire body run more efficiently.

Sun exposure can cause dehydration, which can impact your entire body. It’s also very common to forget to stay hydrated while having fun!

The first step is to stay hydrated during the day. However, if you didn’t drink enough water during your time outdoors, be sure to get hydrated again and drink plenty of water.

Additionally, you can incorporate hydrating foods into your diet, such as watermelon, cucumber, and leafy greens. These fruits and vegetables have high water content and provide essential vitamins and minerals.

Take a cool bath or shower

One of the first things that may help after sun exposure is taking a cool bath or shower. The cooling sensation on warmed skin is welcome. If you are sensitive to cool water, use lukewarm water instead of hot water. Water that is too hot can further dry out your skin.

In addition, avoid harsh soaps or body washes, as they can irritate already sensitive skin. Instead, opt for gentle products, such as pure goat’s milk soap, a Vitamin E-based soap, or a natural skin cleanser.

If you have a sunburn or windswept skin, adding a cup of oatmeal may help. It has soothing properties that can help alleviate discomfort. Soak in the bath for up to 15 minutes and allow your skin to absorb the moisture, but not dry out.

Gently exfoliate your skin

After sun exposure, it’s common for dead skin cells to accumulate on the surface of your skin. Gentle exfoliation can help remove these dead cells, allowing your skin to breathe and promoting better absorption of moisturizers. However, it’s crucial to choose a mild exfoliant to avoid further irritation.

One of the easiest ways to exfoliate your skin gently is to use aloe vera and baking soda. Simply mix one teaspoon of aloe vera with ½ teaspoon of baking soda, and gently rub in circular motions over your skin. Rinse with cool or lukewarm water and pat dry.

Moisturize

Moisturizing is an essential step in after-sun care. Sun exposure can strip your skin of its natural oils, leaving it feeling dry and tight. To replenish moisture, choose a lightweight moisturizer that contains hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, or shea butter. Or you can use plain oil, like Vitamin E oil.

Another option is aloe vera which has soothing and cooling properties. Look for pure aloe vera gel and apply it directly to the skin. Gently massage it using upward motions until it’s fully absorbed. This process can be repeated to soothe skin.

After showering or bathing, when your skin is still slightly damp, apply the moisturizer generously. This helps lock in moisture and creates a protective barrier against further moisture loss.
