Supplements to Help Maintain Joint Health

We’re biological machines and our joints are the gears and bearings that keep us chugging along. Following a healthy diet and getting plenty of movement daily is the best thing you can do for your joint health, but some supplements can help maintain the health of the different elements of your joint system.*

Always consult with a healthcare provider before starting a new supplement routine.

The Anatomy of the Joint System

It’s not just as simple as shoulders, knees, and elbows: your joint system is complex and is made up of different components:

  • Bones

The human skeletal system has over 200 bones, all of which help safeguard your internal organs and support muscle attachment.

  • Cartilage

This smooth rubbery tissue covers the ends of your bones to keep them apart and acts like a cushion. Whenever there’s impact to your joints (example: running on pavement), cartilage works to absorb the shock to protect your bones and internal organs.

  • Ligaments

Ligaments are tough bands that link bones and organs together to hold them in place. They play a role in controlling your range of motion (how far you can extend a joint in varying directions). A ligament you may know is the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) inside the knee, which runs from the thigh bone (femur) to the shin (tibia) and helps to stabilize the knee joint.

  • Tendons

Whenever you sprint to catch a bus or stretch to grab something from the top shelf, it’s your tendons at work. These long and thin fibrous tissues transfer energy from muscle contractions into movement. You might know the Achilles behind the calf, which can help with running or jumping.

Joint Health Supplement Spotlight

Collagen is a naturally occurring protein that plays a role in maintaining cartilage integrity as well as the tendons and ligaments. There are more than 16 types of collagen but Type I, II, and III cartilage make up 80 to 90% of the collagen in your body. Take collagen as a supplement to help support your bones and joints.
