As the sun sets earlier and temperatures drop, it is common to notice a shift in mood. These changes in weather and daylight can contribute to a lack of motivation and occasional feelings of sadness or irritability. In this article, we will explore activities to help boost your mood this season.
Take a walk in the fresh crisp air: Despite cold weather, the sun’s warm rays and fresh air can do wonders for your mental and physical health. A lack of exposure to sunlight may reduce vitamin D levels, especially during the winter. So, be sure to bundle up in warm layers, choose a secure walking path, and head out for a mood-enhancing midday stroll.
Explore local museums and art galleries: Immersing yourself in art and history is a great way to keep your spirits lifted. Research shows that both viewing and creating art can stimulate the release of “happy hormones” like dopamine and serotonin.1 Not only do museums and galleries offer beauty and culture to be admired, but they’re also a great way to incorporate some physical activity into your day.
Maintain an active social life: When the daylight has already diminished by 5:00 PM, it can be difficult to muster up the energy for social interactions. While it’s okay to enjoy quality alone time, it’s important not to isolate yourself completely. Isolation can have negative effects on both your mental and physical well-being. Stay connected with others by volunteering, hosting a game night, joining a book club, or participating in virtual events.
Treat yourself to a spa day: Whether that means visiting a spa or creating your own oasis at home, pampering yourself is a great way to relax and reset. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, self-care practices can help support stress management and may even increase energy levels.2 Set the mood with a delightful candle, prepare a soothing bath, apply a luxurious face mask, pour your favorite beverage, and embark on a blissful journey of relaxation.
It’s no secret that a change in weather can have an impact on our mood. However, there are activities to engage in that can help maintain a positive mindset, even during colder and shorter days. Prioritizing self-care and participating in activities that bring joy and relaxation can help keep those winter blues at bay.
