An accidental hybrid between pomelos and sweet oranges, grapefruit was coined the “forbidden fruit of Barbados” by Reverend Griffith Hughes in 1750. The crop spread throughout Jamaica, but grapefruit is still relatively young to the United States. It wasn’t until 1823 that the fruit was brought to Florida by Odet Philippe, who was born in France but became the first European settler in Pinellas County. Throughout the next 100 years, cultivation grew to include states like Arizona, California, and especially Texas, where the Ruby Red grapefruit gained commercial success in 1929.
