10 Hot Health and Wellness Trends Coming in 2023

by Melissa Chichester

Already thinking about health and wellness in the new year? You’re not alone.

As we approach the new year, certain trends are already emerging. Let’s take a look at what’s coming up in 2023.

#1. Fish oil supplements

Fish oil contains beneficial omega-3 fatty acids that cannot be found in the body. Omega-3 fatty acids need to be consumed from your diet. They’re usually found in fatty fish, including salmon, trout, shellfish, and oysters.

In addition, fish oil provides two types of omega-3 fatty acids: DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). Omega-3 fatty acids are considered good fats that support heart, joint and metabolic health.*

Since many people do not consume enough seafood or fish to receive these essential acids, fish oil supplements can help.

#2. Mindfulness

Mindfulness made the list in 2021, and since then this trend has only grown. Living well has only become more important as the science around health and wellness grows. More and more people are aware of not only what their bodies need but also what the world around them needs. The idea of mindfulness has become one of the most important factors in wellness and holistic living.

Simple ways to practice mindfulness include:

  • Meditating
  • Yoga
  • Relaxation exercises
  • Breathwork
  • Clean diets
  • Getting outside in nature
  • What we eat

Being mindful is a part of every moment and all of our decisions. This includes what we eat and drink and how we spend our time. Mindfulness is about making healthy decisions for ourselves, our families, and the planet and environment.

#3. Probiotic foods and supplements

Probiotics are here to stay – the good bacteria that naturally live in your body. These friendly bacteria provide health benefits by supplementing the microbes naturally living in our bodies. Depending on the species and strain, a probiotic may impact one or more areas of health, from digestion to immune health and vitamin production.*

#4. Well-being in the workplace

The way we work has shifted in the last three years. More and more businesses are flexible in their approach to how and where employees spend their time. As a result, more people are asking for and creating work-life balance to improve their well-being. Businesses are responding to this demand by creating more benefits on the job, such as providing subscriptions to meditation apps, free counseling sessions, and providing more leadership training, and team-building activities.

#5. Digital health

Today we have more options than ever to keep track of our health at home. From apps to wearable devices, there is something for everyone. We can even go to the doctor at home through a telehealth appointment. Digital health is growing rapidly – and it isn’t slowing down.

Apps targeting specific health challenges help people with self-care. For example, there are many apps available to track exercise, food eaten, sleep, and even screen time.

At-home testing is also growing in popularity. This means you can work with your doctor and conduct specific tests right from your house, mail the test, and go over the results virtually.

#6. Product attributes

As time goes by people are becoming more knowledgeable about ingredients and how products are made. As a result, the desire for products with specific attributes has grown. This includes gluten-free, non-GMO, sugar-free, paraben-free, and more. It can include the USDA Organic seal, the Leaping Bunny seal, and other certifications.

Immune system health and support remain a top focus. This trend continues to shape decisions people make about their lifestyle habits, diet, and supplements.

Immune support supplements also continue to be popular.* This includes innovations such as elderberry gummies and effervescent supplements.

#8. Functional food and beverages

People are looking to get more out of what they consume and pay for. As a result, food and drinks with specific benefits have soared in popularity. Products that taste good and support everything from energy to gut health to heart health are in demand.

Examples of functional foods and drinks include:

  • Fermented probiotic beverages
  • Drinks infused with adaptogens

#9. Sustainability

Environmentally conscious products are becoming more and more important to people everywhere. Consumers are looking for manufacturing processes and companies that don’t cause harm to people, animals, or the planet. Eliminating food waste, and environmentally friendly packaging are some of the top concerns.

#10. Bone health

As people live longer and health consciousness expands, people are becoming more aware of specific micronutrient requirements needed for health and wellness. As a result, more people seek to fill in nutritional gaps in their diets with supplementation. And as the population ages, older adults are focusing on bone health to help maintain quality of life.*
