5 Supplements that Support Prostate Health

by Melissa Chichester

It’s important for men of all ages to think about prostate health, especially men over age 50.

The prostate is a small gland in men located below the bladder and is about the size of a walnut. The word prostate comes from a Greek expression meaning, “one who stands before,” which describes its placement.1

What does the prostate do?

The prostate has three main functions:

  • Fluid production – The prostate produces one of the fluids found in semen that is important for sperm motility and overall male fertility.1
  • Flow regulation – The prostate directs the flow of fluids through the urethra and seminal ducts.1
  • Hormone metabolism – Testosterone is transformed to its more potent form, dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the prostate.1

How to support prostate health

It might feel embarrassing to talk about, but taking care of your prostate is as important as any other part of your health.

Maintaining a healthy weight, exercising, eating a nutritious diet, staying hydrated, and reducing stress are all lifestyle habits that can positively impact prostate health.

Supplements can also be a part of your healthy prostate routine. Here are 5 supplements that support prostate health.*

Lycopene

Lycopene is a vibrant red carotenoid pigment found in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, including watermelon, grapefruit, mangos, tomatoes, and papayas.

Lycopene has antioxidant properties that help fight free radicals in the body.* Free radicals can cause oxidative stress which may damage cells.* Other benefits of lycopene include supporting heart health and prostate health.*

Saw Palmetto

Native to the southeastern United States, saw palmetto can be found growing from South Carolina to Mississippi and throughout Florida. The plant has brownish-black berries that have a long history of traditional use by Native Americans.

Saw Palmetto is a popular supportive herb for men.* It supports urinary function in mature men and prostate health.* The active components in saw palmetto are fat soluble and the dietary fat in a meal will help facilitate optimal absorption.

During the early part of the twentieth century, American Eclectic practitioners used it for prostate and urinary health.*  The Eclectics used the beneficial properties of locally available herbs to create health-promoting tonics.2f

Saw palmetto capsules can also be opened and prepared as tea.
