Three Supplements that May Help Support Brain Health

by Melissa Chichester

Brain health has become one of the top health and wellness concerns that is rapidly being studied by researchers.

In addition to this sector of health being further explored daily, many individuals are taking charge and doing their own research. Diet, exercise, and genetics all play a role in maintaining a healthy and active mind, and many people support brain health through supplementation as well.* Let’s explore the top three bestselling supplements in the Puritan’s Pride “Brain Health” category.

#1: Gingko Biloba

Gingko biloba fossils dating back 270 million years have been found in China, where the plant was cultivated in early human history. Gingko is native to China and has many uses in traditional wellness practices, and it was a source of food. Today, the plant is still used for culinary and health purposes. Gingko nuts are used to make a rice porridge dish called congee, and because this is such a treat it is typically reserved for serving at traditional Chinese weddings. As a supplement, gingko biloba assists in maintaining circulatory health and helps supports memory, especially occasional mild memory problems associated with aging.*

#2: Vinpocetine

Vinpocetine is a chemically distinct derivative of vincamine, an alkaloid found in the lesser periwinkle plant. In 1978, this substance was isolated from the plant by a Hungarian chemist, Csaba Szántay. Although this supplement has been around for over thirty years, researchers are still studying the potential benefits of it today. A 2018 update on vinpocetine from the European Journal of Pharmacology cites that it is being tested for its impact on not only brain health, but other areas of the body, including the heart; however, no conclusive results have been made yet.
