5 Skincare Acids You Need to Know

by Melissa Chichester

Acid: The word alone sounds like nothing anyone wants to put on their face, but as it turns out, some acids are good for promoting healthy and radiant skin. This applies to all ages, skin types, and skin concerns.

Alpha hydroxy acid (AHA)

Alpha hydroxy acids are naturally found in foods like citrus fruits and apples and are commonly used in cosmetics for promoting smoother surface on your skin. AHAs are usually used to help with dry skin and dullness.

Alpha lipoic acid (ALA)

Alpha lipoic acid is a potent acid that is used in very small amounts on the skin. It is water and fat-soluble and used in many skin creams.

Beta hydroxy acid (BHA)

Also known as salicylic acid, BHAs are likely the most popular acid in the skincare industry. BHA works to help remove clogs from pores. BHA is best for those with oily or combination skin for that reason.

Glycolic acid

Glycolic acid is derived from plants like pineapple and sugarcane, and it is typically used to exfoliate skin. The gentle exfoliation helps make your skin feel smooth and radiant.

Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid has become increasingly popular in recent years. It is known for its hydrating qualities.  Unfortunately, hyaluronic acid levels in the body decrease with age.
