5 Beauty Uses for Coconut Oil

by The Puritan's Pride Editorial Team

What if I told you there was one product that could replace at least five other items in your beauty routine? It might seem too good to be true, right? Well, coconut oil is the item that can do just that! Trust me: I used to be a coconut oil skeptic, and now it’s a staple of my skin and hair care collection.

Unlike most oils that are usually sold in liquid form, coconut oil may take on the appearance of either a liquid or a solid, since it has a melting point of 76 degrees. If it is solid, coconut oil is easy to melt by rubbing a spoonful between your hands, placing the container in a bowl of hot water, or heating it in the microwave for intervals of 15 to 20 seconds.

Here are five ways to use coconut oil for beauty and de-clutter your vanity in the process!

Makeup Remover- Use it as a cleansing oil by massaging it directly onto the skin with your fingers, or dab it onto a cotton pad. Coconut oil even dissolves stubborn, waterproof mascaras! Simply rinse your face with water when you’re finished.

Cuticle Oil- As a former nail biter, I need something heavy-duty to keep my dry cuticles in check. Since coconut oil is natural and free of artificial ingredients, it is easy to moisturize not only my fingers, but my toes too, for sandal season!

Shaving- Shaving cream doesn’t have to be an unwieldy, foaming mess of white bubbles. Rub some coconut oil between your palms, let it melt from the shower steam and apply it directly to the skin for a smooth, moisturizing shave.

Frizz Tamer- I have unruly, wavy hair that is often frizzy, and I’ve tried just about every de-frizz product under the sun to bring it under control. Coconut oil is the easiest way to smooth out my waves and add some shine, and just a few drops will do the trick. Simply melt a teaspoon of coconut oil in a bowl, dab it on your fingertips, and apply to frizz-prone hair. Work slowly, applying just a small amount at a time.

Lip balm- Artificial fragrances in manufactured lip balms often deprive the skin of their naturally occurring moisture – the exact opposite of what we expect lip balm to do for us. Coconut oil can be used to create homemade lip balms, or it can simply be applied directly to the lips. I melt a small amount and apply it before bedtime so it has time to work it’s magic while I’m sleeping.

Coconut oil can also be used in conjunction with other ingredients to create scrubs, face masks, and other self-care items, but as you can see, it works wonders all on its own. What else do you use it for? Leave a comment below with your thoughts and ideas.
