Homemade Peppermint Pizazz Bath Bombs

by Melissa Chichester

Do you love surprising people with thoughtful and unique handmade gifts? If so, these peppermint bath bombs are sure to make the recipients smile, especially if they love relaxing in the tub after a long day. I love making gifts for friends and family, and bath bombs are a creative option for those who don’t want clutter in their homes (the bath bombs are only good for one use), or for people who are difficult to buy gifts for (like the people who have everything!).

Ingredients

  • ½ cup baking soda
  • ¼ cup citric acid
  • ¼ cup Epsom salt
  • ¼ cup cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon water
  • 1 teaspoon peppermint essential oil
  • 1 ½ teaspoon avocado oil
  • 2 drops food coloring (optional)

You will also need: bath bomb molds

Directions

  1. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk all dry ingredients: baking soda, citric acid, Epsom salt, and cornstarch. Mix until there are no clumps.
  2. In a small glass jar or bowl, mix the wet ingredients: water, essential oil, avocado oil, and food coloring (if using).
  3. Very slowly pour the wet ingredients into the bowl with the dry ingredients, whisking the ingredients while pouring. “Slowly” is the important part here; if you pour the liquid too fast, the mixture will begin to fizz, and you don’t want that to happen until these bath bombs hit the bathwater! Whisk until everything is mixed together.
  4. Fill each half of the bath bomb mold until it is slightly over flowing. Press each half together. Put the bath bomb in your palm, and remove the top mold.
  5. VERY GENTLY flip the bath bomb over in your palm, and remove the other half of the bath bomb mold. If it falls apart, simply repeat step 4.
  6. Place in a glass dish and allow to dry for at least 10 hours, or overnight.
  7. This recipe makes about 3 small bath bombs (about 2 inches wide).

Tips

  • I use stainless steel bath bomb molds because they are easy to wash and are longer lasting than plastic molds. I purchased mine on eBay (I also purchased citric acid on eBay).
  • By making two batches of different colors, you can make two-tone bath bombs.
  • If substituting another oil for avocado oil, use one with a neutral scent (like jojoba oil) so it doesn’t interfere with the scent of the essential oil.
  • Although it’s tempting to rush through the project, work slowly, and you will have much better results. I broke many bath bombs and learned this the hard way!
  • For gift giving, wrap each individual bath bomb in plastic wrap and place in a decorative bag tied with a ribbon, or inside of a mason jar with a bow on top.
  • When not in use, bath bombs will stay fresh in plastic wrap or a sealed glass container.
