My One Small Change: Being Present

As a busy mother, between raising kids, working for yourself, and taking care of a home, it can be difficult to slow down and enjoy the present. If you’re anything like me, you find your mind wandering to the next needs-to-get-done task on your list, always rushing, planning, calculating, and trying to stay one step ahead.

However, if you never just take those moments to enjoy the now, you may find yourself frustrated and wondering where all of those nows ended up.

A goal I’ve set out for myself lately has been to be present. What does that mean for me? Well, it starts off by taking the time to purposely slow down and be aware of everyday happenings — to be aware of my surroundings, my life, and the little things that go unnoticed or unrecognized when life gets busy and hectic.

One of my best tips for being present in my everyday life is to put down my camera. Seems strange, right? We are in such a habit, these days, of documenting each and every minute of our lives — via social media or snapping photographs (or both!); but, I find that sometimes an overly documented moment loses some of that specialness that you need in your life. It’s wonderful to take photos of your children or of a beautiful sunset, but from time to time, try to just be present in the moment, enjoy the sights, smells, and feelings without clicking that shutter. You’ll be amazed at just how connected and present you really feel.

Being present can be about taking your day, and your thoughts, one step at a time. Your breathing changes — think deep belly breaths — you feel more focused and often calmer than when you’re not present.

Lastly, I would also recommend surrounding yourself with others who are present in their own lives. You’ll absolutely pick up on that vibe from them and carry in into your life. It feels great to be with like-minded people and the benefits will be mutual.
