5 Surprisingly Healthy Unhealthy Foods

I am an expert in healthy eating for a healthy, fit body. You might catch me downing a SunWarrior protein shake, or eggs and oatmeal on a regular basis, but I’ll be honest: I also indulge in the sweeter things in life! That’s what a healthy lifestyle is all about: balance. There are staples in my diet that mainstream nutritionists would probably say are ‘bad’ for me. Just remember that portion sizing, timing, and a consistent 85% healthy diet makes all the difference in sticking to your goals. Here are some everyday foods that you may think are unhealthy. It just may surprise you that they are better than you thought!

Popcorn
Popcorn is an excellent source of fiber, whole grain that also provides antioxidants called polyphenols.

What to eat: Air popped popcorn.

What not to eat: Movie theater popcorn covered in butter, pre-packaged ‘pop in bag’ popcorn, and any popcorn with the ‘extras’.

Red Meat
Red meat contains  Protein, Iron, B vitamins, and other important minerals.

What to eat: A normal 6-8 ounce portion of lean, grass-fed organic beef.

What not to eat: A 16-ounce steak covered in butter.

Fresh eggs Egg Yolks
Egg yolks contain omega-3 fatty acids and are a good protein option.

What to eat: One free range yolk with egg whites

What not to eat: Six yolks at a time.

Chocolate
Chocolate is heart healthy as it contains minerals, and antioxidants, including flavanoids. Flavanoids may aid in improving vascular function and relax blood vessels. The darker the chocolate, the more flavanoids it has.

What to eat: 70+% dark cacao chocolate.

What not to eat: Milk Duds, Snickers, Twix bars, and other highly processed candies.

Coffee
Coffee is  well-known for its stimulatory effects. Coffee is also linked to brain health and athletic performance.

What to drink: Black coffee or espresso with almond milk and stevia.

What not to drink: Coffee loaded with sweeteners, full-fat lattes, and other sugary coffee drinks.

While it is important to make every nutrition decision with a balanced mindset, having some variety that won’t break your goals might be the spice you need! Try these 5 surprisingly healthy unhealthy foods next time you’re in the mood to change things up.

    I just got unaddicted to coffee. My adrenals were compromised with coffee. I think other foods are better than highly addictive coffee.
